Non-Compensatory Composite Indicators for Ranking Countries: A Defensible Setting
نویسندگان
چکیده
Composite indicators for ranking countries are more and more popular in a variety of economic and policy domains such as industrial competitiveness, sustainable development, globalisation and innovation. As a consequence, improvements in the way these indicators are constructed and used seem to be a very important research issue from both the theoretical and operational points of view. This paper starts with an analysis of the axiomatic system underlying the mathematical modelling commonly used to construct composite indicators. Then a different methodological framework, based on non-compensatory rules, is developed. Main features of the proposed approach are: (i) the axiomatic syst em is made completely explicit, and (ii) the sources of technical uncertainty and imprecise assessment are reduced to the minimum possible degree.

Uncertainty assessment of the road safety index
Composite indicators aggregate domain-specific information in one index, on the basis of which countries can be assigned a relative ranking. Recently, the road safety community got convinced of the policy supporting role of indicators in terms of benchmarking, target setting and selection of measures. However, combining the information of a set of relevant risk indicators in one index presentin...

Risk analysis is necessary for portfolio management. Investors in setting an appropriate portfolio need to pay attention to risk-related indicators as well as profitability. Beside soft approaches for composing indicators to an index such as AHP, the optimization approaches such as DEA are also considered. However, if the indicators have a hierarchical structure, then it is no longer possible t...

Introduction of Human Development Index (HDI) by UNDP in early 1990 followed a surge in use of non-parametric and parametric indices for measurement and comparison of countries performance in development, globalization, competition, well-being and etc. The HDI is a composite index of three indicators. Its components are to reflect three major dimensions of human development: longevity, knowledg...
متن کاملRepresenting Uncertainty in Ranking by Single or Multiple Indicators
Ranking a set of measurements, or ranking a set of model outputs, is a generic task for decision support. In the case of multiple indicators, a composite index is often defined. However, as Patil and Taillie (2004) point out, “every such composite involves judgements (often arbitrary or controversial) about tradeoffs or substitutability among indicators.” These concerns are addressed by the con...
